Specialist Wizard

"Look, maybe evocation isn’t your thing. I know fireball is a cool spell and everything, but every wizard is already doing it. Hey….remember that time you summoned that huge group of zombies out of nowhere? That blew the Headmaster’s mind! They were sterilizing the banquet hall for weeks!"
——Professor Paloman, encouraging a soon to be Specialist Wizard, much to the detriment of the surrounding countryside.

The Specialist Wizard has chosen to develop skill in a specific school of magic, foregoing training in two others. Many Wizards choose this path for the greater, if somewhat narrower, power it yields in their area of interest. In fact, this is often preferred, for having a reputation as a master of a particular type of magic often means contracting work specific to that type of magic, often times because no one else can do it, allowing the practitioner to charge a premium for their services. Others choose to take this study on the road, and master their abilities while adventuring, which can reap its own rewards depending on the challenges they face.

Specialist wizards are wizards that focus in a single school of Eldritch Magic. They gain benefits when using powers from that school, but also pay the price of loosing the ability to cast spells from a different school.

Specialist Wizard I

A Specialist Wizard picks a favored school, increasing the power of their spells from that school as well as reducing the effort it takes to cast them. They also must choose prohibited schools, as their devotion to their preferred school takes up too much time to focus on others, and their ability to cast spells in their less practiced schools becomes a bit clumsy. This focus yields extra knowledge in their field, however, and they gain new powers every time they advance to a new tier of magic.

Prerequisites

  • Rank 2 Eldritch
  • Wizard Class
  • The Specialist Wizard talent must be taken at Character Creation (usually first level).
  • Cost: 1 Destiny Point

Features

♦ Favored School
Choose an Eldritch Discipline. This Discipline becomes favored for you. When casting spells from your favored Discipline, reduce any energy costs by 1 (to a minimum of 0) and you get a +1 Talent Bonus to the spell's potency. This does not effect Energy Burn, Karma, or Upkeep costs.
♦ Bonus Powers
The first time you learn a power from each tier (Basic, Advanced, Legendary, and Ultimate), you gain a bonus Spell Mastery from your favored Discipline of that tier (you must still meet all prerequisites for the power).
♦ Prohibited Schools
Choose 2 Eldritch Disciplines. These Disciplines become prohibited for you. You cannot master, memorize, or cast spells from a prohibited Discipline.
♦ Non-Favored Schools
Whenever you cast an Eldritch Spell from a non-favored Discipline, increase the Casting Time for the spell by one. If the spell does not have a casting time, increase the recovery time by one instead.
