Acquiring Spells

Certain Character Classes, such as the Wizard, can accumulate and store Spells in a Spell Book for memorization when they need them. These characters gain some spells for free throughout their character's career, but they can also be acquired while adventuring. One way that a character can get new spells is by finding them: either as part of some secret treasure horde, within a long forgotten library, or from within the Spell Book of a fallen enemy. Another way that a character acquires spells is be purchasing them from another Wizard, learning institution, curio shop, or similar location.

Cost of Spells

There are two costs associated with purchasing Spells, the cost of access to the spell and the material cost of copying the spell into your Spell Book. The Access Cost of a spell is generally based on the Rank of the Spell and can be determined using the following formula:

Access Cost = [Rank of Spell]2 x 10gp

The Access Cost for a Spell is only required when the spell is purchased, and not if a copy is found elsewhere. The Material Cost to copy the spell however, described below, is required any time that you want to add a spell to your Spell Book.

To copy the spell into your Spell Book, you must use Magical Ink to write the spell. The amount of Ink you need is approximately 10gp per page of text, with a Spell requiring a number of pages equal to twice the Rank of the Spell. The cost of ink required can be quickly determined with the following formula:

Ink Cost of Spell = [Rank of Spell] x 20gp
