Attack Types

There are several different types of attacks in Quest of Destiny. Here we will discuss each of the different attack types and how they are indicated on a Power.

Melee Attacks

Melee Attacks require that you be within physical reach of an opponent (i.e. you can touch them with your hands). For a medium sized creature, this means that the creature is adjacent to you and within 5ft. Melee Attacks are indicated in the attack line of the power as "Melee Attack:" and is followed by the attack and defense score that the power utilizes. Your attack score for a Melee Attack should be either listed as "Melee", which indicates that you should use your Melee Attack score (unmodified by a weapon) or will be listed as "Grapple", which indicates you should use your Grapple score.

Melee Weapon Attacks

Melee Weapon Attacks require that you be within weapon reach of an opponent. For many weapons, this reach will be no different than your physical reach, but some weapons and abilities can increase the reach of your attacks. Melee Weapon Attacks are indicated in the attack line of the power as "Attack" and will list "Melee Weapon" as the attack score. This indicates that you should use the attack score of the Weapon you are utilizing to make the attack. This can include making an Unarmed Attack, which counts as utilizing a Weapon.

Ranged Attacks

Ranged Attacks allow you to throw an item, such as a potion or contact poison (something that is not a weapon), at an opponent. Ranged Attacks are indicated in that attack line of a power as "Ranged Attack" and is followed by "Ranged" in the attack line, which indicated that you should use your Ranged Attack score (unmodified by a weapon). The range at which you can throw the object should be listed on the ability.

Ranged Weapon Attacks

Ranged Weapon Attacks require that the opponent be within range of your weapon, or you suffer a penalty to the Attack Roll. When exceeding the Range of the Weapon, you suffer a -2 penalty to the attack roll (up to double the range of the weapon). For targets exceeding double the Range of the Weapon, this penalty increases to -4 (up to triple the ranged of the weapon). You cannot effectively target creatures with a ranged weapon at more than triple the weapon range. Ranged Weapon Attacks are indicated in the attack line of a power as "Attack" and will show "Ranged Weapon" as the attack score. This indicates that you should use the attack score of the Weapon you are utilizing to make the attack.

Magical Attacks

Magical Attacks utilize a particular attack score unique to the philosophy your are utilizing (i.e. Arcana for Eldritch, Devotion for Divine, etc). Magical Attacks are indicated in the attack line of a power as "Attack" and are followed by the particular attack score utilized by that power. The ranges for these powers will vary and be listed by the specific power.
