A Role-playing Game, or RPG, is a game system that provides rules and guidelines to assist a group of players in creating a story. Each player serves a different role and portrays a character within the story, be it the hero, villain, or narrator. RPGs exist in a variety of forms, from Tabletop to Video Games to even Live Action. In a Table-top (or pen-and-paper) Role-playing Game, players build the story through their words, describing the setting, actions, and speech of characters as the story progresses.

There are many different types of Table-top RPGs, each with its own rule system and setting, but all provide guidelines to resolve conflicts between the players and the story itself. RPGs are often set in alternate worlds, such as fantasy, historical, science fiction, futuristic, or any combination of genres. Some RPGs have very few rules and broad guidelines, allowing the players greater freedom in the creation of the story and its characters. These systems are typically less like a game (lacking random outcomes to drive the story) and more like round-table storytelling. Other RPG systems, such as QoD, have in-depth rules and guidelines to provide structure with which to build the story. These RPGs play more like a game, typically with dice determining the success or failure of actions within the story.

Collaborative Storytelling

Role-playing Games are a unique combination of playing a game and telling a story. An RPG contains the same elements as a story: a setting, characters, challenges the characters must face, and goals the characters attempt to reach. Like a game, each player controls a character, comparable to a pawn or piece in a board game. The plot of the story is dynamic, changing as players make choices for their characters. The character's actions and the potentially random outcomes of those actions, drive the plot forward and create a story.

The focus of an RPG is generally on a group of main characters, which are portrayed by the players. The players work together to build the story, determining the words, desires, and actions of their individual characters. Characters will further face challenges, the outcome of which determines the future course of the story. Challenges can take many forms, including opposing villains, solving puzzles and riddles, searching for remote locations, and fighting exotic and dangerous creatures. As characters persevere, they grow and change, further driving the story forward. The story continues for as long as the players want, lasting anywhere from a couple of hours to a year or more of regular meetings.

In many RPGs, one player takes on a leadership role, acting as a referee or narrator for the story. This player often provides the overall structure for the story, creating the environment and challenges that characters will face. In QoD, this player is known as the Gamemaster (or GM).

What is Role-playing?

Role-playing is playing the part of a character within a story. You determine the character's desires and actions and determine how it reacts to the events of the story. You also act out the character's conversations with others. Role-playing is about stepping outside yourself and breathing life into a fictional being, much as a novelist or actor does with the characters in their books.

Think about your favorite character from a book or movie. Think about the way they speak, the way they act towards others, the way they respond to the challenges they face. In an RPG, you create all these aspects of your character and more. All of a character's habits, prejudices, mannerisms, and decisions are determined by you. Your character's interactions and decisions, in turn, shape the course of the story as it progresses.
