Seamanship represents the knowledge of and the ability to sail. It also includes the ability to sail through harsh conditions, such as heavy currents or stormy weather. Seamanship also includes the tying and use of a variety of knots. Seamanship Lore includes knowledge of different types of sailing vessels, the ability to maintain and repair those vessels, knowledge of ship design and how design affects performance, and familiarity with major shipping ports.
