Creating Consumable Items

Consumable items (such as Potions, Salves, Magical Ammunition, etc) may be created through use of the Alchemy Skill. Their effects are varied and their relative strength is indicated by the Item's Rank (Rank 1 being the weakest consumables and Rank 10 the most powerful). The higher the rank of the consumable, the more difficult it is to make and the more difficult its ingredients are to find and gather. In addition to requiring the Alchemy skill, most consumables require Eldritch Arts or Religious Arts knowledge in order to complete.

Obtaining Consumable Recipes

Consumable Item recipes are obtained similarly to how Rituals are obtained, either by discovering the recipes through adventuring and research, or purchasing the recipes from alchemists, religious organizations, and magical institutions. As a general rule, the cost of access to an Alchemical recipe is [Rank of Item]2 x 10gp. Unlike Rituals, however, Alchemical recipes do not have to be copied with Magical Ink.

The recipe can also be reverse engineered from the item itself, though the research process destroys the item and requires an Alchemy check with a Difficulty equal to the [Rank of Item + 4].

Collecting Ingredients

Consumable Items require a collection of ingredients of varying rarities. As a general guideline, the higher rank the item, the more complex and rare the list of ingredients. Ingredients can sometimes be purchased, with more common ingredients being easier to find and purchase than others, but may also be Collected or Harvested through adventuring.

Creating a Consumable Item

Once all ingredients have been collected and the necessary equipment has been gathered, the creation process may begin. Your consumable item will have a Rank, which signifies the minimum Alchemy Rank required to create the item. Creating a consumable item is time consuming and taxing to the mind and body, taking 1 hour per Rank of the item to create and requiring [10 + Consumable Rank] Stamina Burn and [10 + Consumable Rank] Resolve Burn to complete the process. Additionally, once the creation is complete, you must make an Alchemy check [DC (3 x Consumable Rank) +20]. If the check succeeds, you create the item normally. If you fail the check by 9 or less, you create the consumable item, but it may be Tainted. If you fail the check by 10 or more, your attempt fails and all ingredients (and your energy) are lost.

Due to the chaotic and unpredictable energies of the world that can interfere with the process, Consumable Items created in an area area sanctified by an Alchemist's Ground Ritual are much more likely to succeed and gain a +10 bonus to the Alchemy check.

Synergistic Magical Abilities

Most Consumable Items have one or more magical abilities, such as Eldritch Spells or Divine Prayers, whose magical signature is similar to that of the item. If you have a Spell or Prayer mastered that has synergy with the consumable item you are trying to create, gain a +5 bonus to your Alchemy check due to your deep understanding of the magics imbuing the item.
