Opposed Checks

An Opposed Check consists of two opponents each making a die roll (usually with a bonus), and comparing the results against each other. The opponent with the highest result wins the check. In the case of a tie, the active opponent wins (i.e. the opponent that initiated the action that prompted the check).

If the check is an opposed d20 roll and one opponent rolls a Natural 20, that opponent automatically wins unless the other opponent also rolls a natural 20 (in which case the opponent with the highest result wins as usual). Likewise, if an opponent rolls a natural 1, they automatically fail, unless the other opponent also rolls a natural 1.

Karma may be spent by the active opponent to force both parties to reroll, taking the second result in place of the first.

Sometimes the result of an opposed roll augments the outcome, such as getting an additional effect if you beat your opponent by 10 or more (or vice versa).

Common Opposed Checks include:

  • Opposed Grapple Checks
  • Opposed Potency Checks
  • Opposed Weapon Attacks
