Riven
Even the most finely crafted gear can fall prey to the ravages of time and use. Riven represents the cumulative damage that items and equipment take over their lifespan. As an object is used, worn, or subjected to various forms of stress, its Riven level increases. When a piece of equipment reaches critical levels of Riven, it may become unreliable, break down entirely, or even shatter into pieces. Riven can be removed by repairing the item or equipment.
Level | Stage | Effects |
---|---|---|
0 | Pristine | The item is sound and in good condition. |
1-2 | Worn | The item is lightly damaged, showing wear, marring, cracks, dents, small holes, etc. |
3-4 | Damaged | The item is moderately damaged, and no longer functions at full capacity. Any attacks made with the item suffer a -1 penalty and deal -1 damage per weapon die. Any skill checks with the item suffer a -5 penalty. Damaged Armor has a 50% chance of automatically upgrading a glance to a full-hit. |
5-6 | Broken | The item is broken and no longer functions. However, It can still be repaired. Wearing Broken armor still incurs the check penalty, but affords no bonus to defenses. Wielding a broken weapon functions as an improvised weapon. |
7+ | Destroyed | The item is completely non-functional and has been damaged beyond repair. |
Special: Fragile(X) items take X extra levels of Riven whenever they suffer Riven.
Ongoing Riven
Ongoing Riven effects work the same way as Ongoing Damage, with Riven occurring immediately if the initial save is failed.
Removing Riven
Riven can be removed by repairing an item via Armorsmithing, Weaponsmithing, Tinker, and similar skills. Some Magical abilities can also reduce or remove Riven. The time and resources it takes to repair an item are highly variable, depending on the skill of the workers involved, the materials present, and other factors. Items that are completely Destroyed must be constructed anew.
