There was once a prideful thief who constantly bragged about his ability to avoid any danger or trap he had ever encountered. Eventually, through the retelling of this rumor and his continued success, he attracted the attention of a former mark, a mage he had robbed early in his career. The mage had not forgotten this transgression, and bound the thieve’s essence into a magical ring, mockingly promising that the wizard would make a fortune off of his legendary “skill” as recompense for his crimes.
