Trap the Soul

Trap the Soul
Ritual Rank 10 [Binding]
Prerequisites: Eldritch Rank 9
Potency: 50
Components: Target's Truename, Target's Blood, and Magic Essence [Value: 20gp]
Focus: A precious gem [Value: 1,000gp per target's level]
Cost: 2 Karma and 10 Stamina Burn
Prep Time: 1 hour
Cast Time: 1 phase
Duration: Until the gem is broken
Target: One Helpless creature
Effect: You carve the target's Truename into the gem before soaking it in a mixture of Magic Essence and the victim's blood or approximately 1 hour. You then begin to chant, pressing the gem over the target's heart (the target must be considered Helpless at this point). As you complete the incantation, the target becomes shrouded in a dark mist which slowly funnels into the inscription upon the gem. In a few moments, the mist is gone, carrying with it the body and soul of the target. If you hold the gem up to the light, you can faintly see a roiling mist within.

While trapped within the gem, the target remains in a state of Suspended Animation, unaware of its surroundings or what is occurring outside the gem. The target remains trapped within the gem until the gem is broken, at which point it is immediately freed.

A target's Truename is a powerful thing, and often very difficult to obtain. Some creatures will guard their Truename, if it is known to them, with great ferocity. A great deal of research must usually be undertaken in order to discover the Truename of a target.

The more dangerous and skilled the target, the more valuable the gem needed to trap them (i.e. the gem must be worth at least 1,000gp per level obtained by the target). Research or divinations may be necessary to determine the required gem value. If the gem is not valuable enough for the target, the gem shatters and the ritual fails.
