Fondness Disposition

Fondness is a Disposition that represents feelings of attraction and interest in a person. It is a feeling of closeness, of liking that person and enjoyment of their company. Higher ranks of fondness denote a stronger and more powerful emotion, ranging from a mild regard to a deep and powerful affection.

The expression of Fondness differs from person to person and is dependent on their Personality and the type of relationship they've established. Fondness can represent many types of relationships, including romantic interest, camaraderie between friends, and even a dark obsession. Fondness combined with personality motivates many types of behavior, including generosity, support, protectiveness, control, possessiveness, lust, and devotion. Regardless of its exact expression, at its core Fondness results from a positive emotional feeling dependent on another person.

The Ranks of Fondness

Fondness is Ranked from 0 to 5, with Rank 1 representing a weak emotion, and Rank 5 representing the strongest emotion that can be experienced.

Rank 0: This is an absence Fondness. It might indicate ranks in one of the opposing disposition, Fear or Hate.
Rank 1: A mild feeling of fondness.
Ways to Interpret: This is a slight interest, liking, casual friendship, or a mild crush. The NPC is generally friendly, but holds no strong affection for a person. The level of Fondness slightly influences behavior, but has no other bearing on the NPC.
NPC Thoughts: "He is nice and I like him. He sometimes makes me laugh and I usually have a decent time when he's around. I don't seek out his company, but passing on the street I might stop and say, 'Hi'."
Roleplay Ideas:
  • Friendly wave or kind smile.
  • Flirt.
  • Be polite.
  • Be accommodating.
Rank 2: A moderate feeling of fondness.
Ways to Interpret: This is a feeling of friendship and enjoyment of a person, usually accompanied by a feeling of camaraderie. The NPC’s actions are influenced by this good feeling and they are likely to help the person with a small favor. However, this level of Fondness is rarely strong enough to change an NPC’s motives and goals.
NPC Thoughts: "I really like him. He's a great guy. I really enjoy spending time with him and I appreciate his company. If he asked for my help I would gladly give it, as long as it was not too taxing."

This level of fondness is strong enough that the NPC may alter their motives and goals to better include the person in their life or protect them. However, they would not go to extreme circumstances or violate their own beliefs to do so.

This level of fondness directly influences the NPC’s motivations and goals, and it can even slightly warp their personal tendencies and moral compass. The NPC is motivated to take risks for the person, possibly to their own detriment.

Fondness and Other Dispositions

  • Fondness combined with Doubt can synergize to create feelings of Pity, Concern, Charity, Sympathy, and Protectiveness (or overprotectiveness).
  • Fondness combined with Trust can synergize to create feelings of Love, Devotion, Dedication, and Admiration.
  • Fondness is opposed by Fear and Hate. It is not possible to combine Ranks in Fondness with these opposing Dispositions, because the negative emotions of Fear and Hate directly conflict with the positive emotions of Fondness.
