Character Advancement
Your character will gain knowledge, training, and skill in the game. As they do so, characters advance, gaining Experience from challenges a character has faced and overcome. When a character has accumulated enough Experience, it gains a level. Most characters need 2000 Experience Points (XP) to gain one level, but Talents or a high Experience Rating can increase this value.
Increasing Level
When your character's level increases, all aspects of your character that are dependent on Character Level will also change. For each level that your character gains, it will increase the following:
- Increase Hitpoints by "Per Level" Value. Recalculate Healing Value accordingly.
- Increase Stamina and Resolve totals by 1.
- Gain 1 Feat.
- Check your Race and Class pages for level dependent features.
Level Modifier
At certain levels, your Level Modifier will also increase, based on the chart below:

- All Attacks increase by 1.
Skill Points
At each level you gain your "Per Level" Skill Points. You may use these points to increase the rank of a skill you have or to train a new skill (provided that skill is not restricted). See Gaining Skills for more information on determining your Per Level Skill Point total.
Tier | Ranks | Cost per Rank |
---|---|---|
Apprentice | 1 | 1 Skill Point |
Novice | 2-3 | 2 Skill Points |
Journeyman | 4-6 | 3 Skill Points |
Master | 7-10 | 4 Skill Points |
Grand Master | 11-15 | 5 Skill Points |
To raise the rank of a skill, spend Skill Points dependent on the next skill rank you wish to achieve, according to the table to the left. Remember, you cannot increase a skill beyond the Maximum Skill Rank for your Level as determined by the equations below:
Since the higher tiers of skills cost more Skill Points, you may need to save points from a previous level in order to gain these upper tiers.
Whenever you increase the Rank of a skill, it will increase your Skill Check bonus by 2.
Philosophy Rank
At every even level, you gain 1 Philosophy Rank. This rank may be spent in any philosophy in which you have at least one rank, up to the Maximum Philosophy Rank determined by your level. While you will typically spend these ranks in the philosophy granted by your Primary Class (Physical, Mental and one class specific) you may also spend ranks in philosophies granted by feats or Talents. You cannot use this Philosophy Rank to gain a Rank in a Philosophy you do not have access to.
To calculate your Maximum Philosophy Rank, use the following equation:
Increasing Physical Rank
Each time you increase your Physical Rank, it will affect the following:
- Increase your Stamina by 1.
- Increase your Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution Saving Throws by 1.
- Increase your Critical Strike Chance by 1 with each weapon you wield.
- Increase your Critical Strike Damage with each weapon you wield by the weapon's Critical Damage per Rank.
- Increase your Brawn score by 2.
Increasing Mental Rank
Each time you increase your Mental Rank, it will affect the following:
- Increase your Resolve by 1.
- Increase your Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma Saving Throws by 1.
- Increase your Wits score by 2.
Powers
General Powers
At every odd level, you gain 1 General Power. You may choose any Mental Method or Physical Maneuver for which you qualify.
Class Powers
Class Powers are broken up into 4 power categories: Basic, Advanced, Legendary and Ultimate. You gain these powers according to the table below (listed by total number of powers per level). You may choose any power of the appropriate Category or lower for which you meet the prerequisites. Some Races and Classes may grant bonus Class Powers.

Other Advancement Topics
Combat Training
Within the first 11 levels, your Class grants you bonuses in the form of Combat Training. These bonuses can apply to Attacks or Defenses. Sometimes these bonuses are predetermined, and other times you will be given a choice. Whenever you are given a choice, it will be indicated by a question mark (?) within the Class's Combat Training Table. See your Class page to determine the combat training specific to your character.
Class Specialties
At levels 3, 11, and 17, your character gains 1 Class Specialty. You may choose any Specialty from the Class page for which you meet the prerequisites (if any).
Talents
Although there are some Talents that can be chosen at any level, you will begin to qualify for more talents around Level 8. To gain a Talent, you must spend the number of Destiny Points indicated by the talent and meet any prerequisites of the Talent. Many Talents are broken up into multiple tiers, with each additional tiers having higher prerequisites and an additional Destiny point cost.
Your level limits the number of Destiny Points that can be spent on Talents, according to the following equation:
More Talents will become available at even higher levels.
Morale
At level 11 and level 21, increase your Morale score by 1.

There is no limit to the level that a creature may achieve. While most of this site has progressions for powers and other abilities so that they may extend to an infinite level, only the first 30 levels are completely supported. If your character travels to levels beyond 30, then you and your Gamemaster may need to use some imagination to develop new powers and capabilities for characters of higher levels.
