Magic Resistance

Magic Resistance (MR) is a rare ability that affords creatures with protection against magical effects. It essentially causes magic effects to completely ignore the creature, fizzling before the creature is affected or passing through the creature as if it didn't exist. Magic Resistance is usually an innate property of specific races, though, it is possible to gain it through certain powers and abilities. When a creature is targeted with a Magical affect, it may choose to allow the affect to bypass its Magic Resistance automatically as a Free Action.

  • When a creature with Magic Resistance (or its worn or held equipment) is targeted by a magical effect, make an Opposed Check (The effect's Potency vs the target's Magic Resistance). If the potency roll is less than the Magic Resistance roll, the effect fails to target the creature, not affecting it in any way. Otherwise the effect targets the creature as normal.
  • Magic Resistance only applies against effects that directly target the creature. It does not apply against magical effects that do not target the creature, such as a Grease spell's slippery area, a cave-in caused by a rampant Fireball, the invisibility granted by Invisibility Sphere, or a summoned monster's attacks.
  • Magic Resistance does not prevent a magical effect from manifesting, it just fails to affect the protected creature in any way. It does not afford any protection to any other targets of the effect.
  • A creature with Magic Resistance is automatically protected against magical effects, whether it is aware of them or not. However a creature that is aware of an effect may use a free action to allow the magic effect to bypass their magic resistance automatically.
  • Some magical effects and powers are not subject to Magic Resistance. The individual effect will indicate if this is the case.
