Greater Unbinding
Greater Unbinding
Ritual Rank 9
Prerequisites: Mental Rank 7
Potency: 45
Components: Copy of original ritual, components of original ritual
Focus: Focus of original ritual
Cost: 5 Stamina Burn + Cost of original ritual
Prep Time: Equal to original ritual
Cast Time: Twice that of original ritual
Target: One ritual effect
Effect: To bring down the bindings of the ritual before you, you prepare just as you would if you had performed the original ritual yourself. Utilizing the same foci and components, and with a copy of the ritual in hand, you begin to chant, intoning both the words of the original ritual and the words that will unbind and dispel their effects.
A successful Greater Unbinding ritual will unweave another ritual's bindings and terminate its effects.
- In order to complete an unbinding, you must have a copy of the original ritual, utilize foci and components equivalent to those used in the original ritual, and spend the same amount of energy (plus an additional 5 Stamina Burn) as the original ritual.
- The Greater Unbinding must be performed at the location of the target ritual (or at the origin for large rituals). While the prep time for an unbinding is the same as the original ritual, its casting time is twice that (as it requires chanting the original ritual and then unbinding each portion).
- When the Unbinding is complete, make a Ritual Casting check, with a DC equal to the Potency of the ritual you are attempting to unbind.
- Greater Umbinding grants a +10 bonus to this check. If you succeed the check, the unbinding is successful and the target ritual ends. If you fail the check, the unbinding has no effect.
A ritual can only be unbound if it does not have an innate method of termination, as is the case for all Curses, Blights, Blessings, some other rituals (such as Symbol of Weakness and Trap the Soul). Attempting to unbind a ritual with an innate method of termination fails automatically.
If the ritual being unbound has an allocation cost, the original caster of the ritual becomes aware that something threatens the ritual (but gains no further information) when the casting of Unbinding starts.
At the GM's discretion, it may be possible to complete an Unbinding without a copy of the original ritual, but it typically takes weeks of dedicated study (sometimes years) to complete. As a rough guideline, it requires [1d4 x (Ritual Casting Rank)2] weeks.
