Hag Characteristics

Hags appear to be twisted old crones of a venerable age, but a closer look reveals in their haggard, wrinkled features that they possess an intense, seething malevolent gaze, and fae features that may have once been beautiful. They have long, unclean hair that grows in a curtain covering the majority of their body and their skin has taken on a gnarled, weathered look. As fae, every Hag possess a host of unusual supernatural abilities unique to their specific type. These monsters in humanoid form delight in the suffering of others and acts of evil, sometimes for no other reason than to spread suffering. Despite their frail appearance, they are inhumanly strong, having no qualms about battering and clawing an enemy to death with their razor-like fingernails. There are several different types of hags, and these monstrosities are only capable of showing true loyalty to each other, as if they were bound by an unseen emotional tether that concentrates wickedness.

Culture

A Hag can live on its own, or among other Hags, but none of these creatures will suffer the presence of another species for very long. When two or more Hags become aware of each other, they often instinctually move into each other’s space, forming what is known as a Coven. Within this Coven, these twisted Fae create an area of power, usually a cave deep inside a dark, barely travelled swamp or other fetid landscape. A Coven grants the Hags even more power, amplifying their dark magics and granting them supernatural senses that allow them to defend their lair, as well as better lay plans to inflict suffering on others or seize power. Hags are wholly evil, and occasionally seek to align themselves with other powerful evil creatures or forces for personal gain. All such alliances usually fall apart, often with the death of their business partners, once the Hags have gained what they were after.

History

Hags are behind many sudden upsurges of villainy throughout history, although very little of this has been recorded. Still, enough has been learned to provide sufficient warning to the other goodly races. Hags were once benevolent trickster fae, that delighted in mischief and helping the free spirited. It is believed that a dark god on the receiving end of one of their pranks retaliated with a heavy hand, corrupting their beauty and kind hearts in her own image. They are beings of incredible black magic and are directly responsible for the legends in many humanoid cultures surrounding witches and warlocks. It is said that Hags enjoy cursing the lands they live in, as well as their enemies, forever seeking release from a debt against their dark master that can never be repaid.
